Worshipping God – Making Disciples
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”John 8:12
Welcome to the Website of the Anglican Parish of Woolston.
Our Church complex is situated on the corner of Ferry Road and St Johns Street in Woolston, Christchurch.
The parish has been a centre of Christian worship, witness, and service since 1857. The current church, dedicated to St John the Evangelist, was opened in the early 1960s and was extensively repaired and refurbished after the earthquakes of 2011.
Currently we are very much a work in progress. We love welcoming newcomers and helping them feel at home as we celebrate God’s love for us through Jesus Christ.
Our main Sunday service is a weekly Eucharist held at 10.00 a.m. followed by morning tea.
See the Services and Events page for more details of what we offer the community each week.
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent which is a time of preparation for the greatest of Christian Festivals, Easter, when Jesus’ death, for our sakes, and resurrection are remembered and celebrated. In many countries people showed they were sorry by wearing sackcloth and putting ashes on their heads. We do that by receiving the sign of the cross on our foreheads to say we are sorry for the things that separate us from God and one another, and we intend to make a fresh start and open ourselves to all that God has for us.
Ash Wednesday 26 February, combined with Stella Maris Catholic Parish of Ferrymead, a service of worship and Imposition of Ashes, at St John’s at 7 p.m.
Good Friday Tenebrae Service (Service of Shadows) 10 April at 10 a.m.
Easter Sunday Service 12 April at 10 a.m. He is risen! He is risen indeed!
